Mizzou composers create new works
for Stephens College dance concerts
on November 15, 16 & 17 |
Columbia, MO - Six composers from the Mizzou New Music Initiative have created new works in collaboration with choreographers and dancers from Stephens College that will be performed at this year’s Senior Dance Concert at Stephens.
The performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 15 and Saturday, November 16, and at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 17 at the Macklanburg Playhouse, 100 Willis Ave on the Stephens campus.
Tickets are $8 for general admission, $6 for students and seniors, and can be purchased in advance at the Macklanburg Playhouse box office; by calling 573-876-7199; or at the door.
The participating composers and their associated choreographers are Ben Colagiovanni and Jordan Jackson; Shaun Gladney and Kramer Pruitt; Trey Mackler and LeeAnn Davis; Haley Myers and Samantha Bennett; Justin Pounds and Stephanie Reynolds; and David Witter and Samari Jackson-Preston.
For Stephens’ graduating dance majors, the Senior Dance Concert performances represent the culmination of their personal dance experiences - and for the first time ever this year, they’ll also have a unique opportunity to perform with live musical accompaniment.
Working under the supervision of Stephens’ Carol Estey and Mizzou’s William Lackey, the composers and choreographers first met back in May of this year to choose their collaborators. Once classes resumed in the fall of 2013, the dancers and musicians began rehearsing together to prepare the works for performance, fine-tuning the scores and adjusting the choreography as needed.
”This project has been a great opportunity for our students to get
experience in the sort of collaborative situation they’re likely to encounter as working composers,” said Lackey, assistant teaching professor of composition and managing director of the Mizzou New Music Initiative.
