Dear Friends,
Spring is a little slower in coming to Highlands than many other places . . . but you know it is spring when we put the bear fences back up, and turn off the water recycling to the tank on the hill! Both of those things happened this week! And if spring is here, summer is near!
As I write this, I'm thinking about some 'Highlands Heroes.' These are folks who give generously of their time and expertise to the ministry of Highlands. I want to highlight a few 'Highlands Heroes' for you . . .
It has been an interesting winter. In February, we had a weekend in which our water supply dropped so low we had to ask guests to return home. We've made some repairs and also formed "The Water Group." This talented group of people bring knowledge in the area of water rights, engineering, and Highlands. Together, they are helping us to examine our long term water needs and find solutions. I'm grateful to John Winchester, Mark Sears, Jim Nussbaumer and Kile Snyder for their work on this serious issue!
Last spring, as snow began to melt and the ground was wet, we began to see significant problems with our electrical service to the cabins in the main camp area. So this spring, we are in the midst of a major project to replace the electrical service to all of our 'rustic and charming' cabins. We are grateful to Jim Nussbaumer, Bill McNeill, Gary Forbes, Geoff Noble, Buddy Jones, Michael Hanratty and especially Jim's son-in-law, Ishmael, and his friend Eric for their work on this project.
This week, Peggy Marshall, the pastor from First Presbyterian Church of Leadville, spent 3 days clearing willows from the areas in front of the Retreat Center. She has opened up the viewing, and made it much healthier for our aspen grove! We're grateful to Peggy and her chainsaw!
And, I'm also grateful for so many of you that have already put us over halfway towards our goal of raising $100,000 for our Matching Grant for Debt Reduction. Our donor offered to make a first installment at the end of March, and we had already reached $55,000! This month, as I make our interest payment, I've already seen our interest due drop by almost $500. Your gifts for this matching grant make this possible! Our goal is to reach the full $100,000 by the middle of June! You can mail gifts directly to Highlands, or give online at www.highlandscamp.org! Thank you for your generosity!
As summer approaches, I hope that you have registered your child or grandchild for summer camp! Some camps are filling up . . . so don't wait too long! Ashley Safford is our Director of Summer Camp and she's done a great job of recruiting summer staff and volunteers. Katy Ireland, our Program intern, has been working on our Partnership Day Camp program. We have one remaining slot for July 20-25. If your congregation would like to be a Day Camp Partner, call us today!
Grace and Peace!

$100,000 Matching Gift . . . Generosity and Faithful Stewardship
Generosity abounds and faithful stewardship moves us closer and closer to eliminating our debt.
For 2014, a very special matching gift has been made available to Highlands. If we are able to raise $100,000 for debt reduction by June 15th, a generous individual will match those donations with an additional $100,000. This will enable us to meet our mid-year principle reduction and pay-off our Line of Credit by July 1st. To sweeten the pot . . . a first installment of this matching grant was made at the end of March, matching every dollar we had raised to date. . . and donors generously gave $55,000. So we have already reduced our debt by $110,000!
Your faithful stewardship, combined with this generous matching gift, will move us closer to eliminating our debt. We hope to raise $45,000 more by June 15th. You may mail your gift to Highlands or
donate online using the "Donate" button on the home page of our website!

Growing in Faith . . . It’s What We’re About!
How does Highlands differ from a regular summer camp you might ask? It’s because, in addition to being committed to safety and fun like other camps, at Highlands we are solidly committed to sharing the love of Jesus Christ in an outdoor setting. We feature Christ-centered daily Bible studies, worship, and campfire experiences led by our trained and expert staff. Our programs are enhanced by the beauty of God’s creation in which we are able explore, learn, and grow.
What sets Highlands summer camps apart is our goal of helping your child grow in faith and their relationship with God!
