Hello again. Despite having to shift our first presentation to Zoom-only on account of the adverse weather that was predicted for January 10, Senior Scholars met at PUMC for its second in-person program on January 17. Whether you attended in person or via Zoom, I think you’ll agree that we heard
an excellent presentation by Joe Kendrick of WNCW in western North Carolina regarding ways in which music has lifted up and helped to drive forward social movements. Joe will delve into that topic in greater depth when he speaks during our upcoming retreat at the end of April at Wildacres. If you missed his talk last week, you won’t want to miss hearing and speaking with him during our retreat.
Please remember to show your 2025 membership card as you enter Wolfe Hall. |

Speaking of our retreat, we are planning an interesting one. While all details are not yet final, I can say that the entire program – not just Joe’s portion - will revolve around music. With our usual
Wednesday evening musical interlude, rest assured that you’ll hear many tunes and discussions that will stimulate your ears if you attend those three days. Registration will begin tomorrow, forms will be available on the website and copies of the registration form will be at the back table next Friday.

What did you say? Communication, Problem-solving,
and Intelligence in Birds.
Jeffrey Thomas
Professor of Biology, Queens University of Charlotte
Birds, especially songbirds, say a lot. But what do we know about what they’re saying to each other? And how do they use their communication to negotiate interactions with each other, find food, and learn about their surroundings? Birds offer a rich and fascinating opportunity to explore and define animal intelligence and the complexity of communication systems.
Hybrid: In-Person at PUMC & via Zoom
