Effective Compositions

Have you ever found yourself in a position where you can only take a picture from a set angle, often in a confined space?
That's what photographer Bev Cameron faced when she took this lovely portrait of a horse in his stall. The view was narrow and the lighting difficult, with a not-very-attractive shadow on the left.
Bev entered her retouched image (on the upper left) for a critique judging at her local Professional Photographers' Guild (
PPGF of South Florida).
The judges gave the portrait a fairly high score. But, these nationally accredited judges...
Dick Robertson &
Marty Grivjack...suggested to Bev that by flipping the picture horizontally she could turn a very good composition into a better one.
The judges even did a quick back-and-forth comparison in Photoshop that they projected for the Guild attendees to see.
