Tips For Taking Street Photos
in New Locales
|
|
|
Hi ,
Have you ever tried your hand at taking street photos? While snapping away at street scenes can be enjoyable, it's also pretty challenging because great grab shots can disappear in an instant.
What I like about street photography is that it brings together design elements of locale ... sometimes exotic and very different from what I'm used to ... with candid portraiture.
In this newsletter I'd like to share some ideas with you.
About These Pictures:
I took an early Spring transatlantic cruise. The first port-of-call was Ponta Delgada in the Portuguese Azores. The sights were unique for me; with architectural design elements that were a photographer's dream.
As you look through my photos I suggest you examine them to see three key composition tools I use regularly:
-
The Rule of Thirds
-
Perspective
-
Framing of the Main Subject by Surrounding Image Content
Beyond the graphic elements please look for "editorial" story telling techniques I think you'll find interesting:
-
Humor
-
Contrasting Visual "Ideas"
-
Integrating Human Subjects Into Their Surroundings
I hope you'll find these photographs and my observation useful for your own travel photographs.
Good shooting!
Dale

Incorporating Architectural Elements With Live Action Shots of People
|
|
This Photo Illustrates Bringing Nearly
All Photographic "Tricks" Together
- Rule of Thirds: People are all in the left third of the picture; graphics in the right two thirds.
- Perspective: Diagonal lines in the street lead the eye and project a feeling of motion.
- Color: The only splotch of color is in the graphic wall design in the center of the image.
Do you think it adds to the picture or is the color a distraction?
- Human Interest: The man on his motorized wheelchair brings a different take to what might be a very ordinary shot.

Consider Whether Your Pictures Would Be Stronger In Black & White

The Same Image Converted To B&W
- Human Interest: The man on his wheelchair is now the focal point of the photograph; the graphics diminished.
- Technique: I made this change with a single click in Photoshop. All of my lab's online print programs (ROES for professionals, iPrints.com or iPrints Classic) offer the same single click capability.

Design Elements Bring The Viewer's Eye
Into the Picture
- Varying Shapes: Rectangles, the curve of the archway, perspective and utilizing shadow versus light all combine to create an interesting image.
- Human Interest:: The back-lit subject provided a single focal point.
- I felt that the contrasting graffiti and posters told an interesting social story.
- I considered removing the cell phone in the woman's hand because I thought it might be distracting. But, I decided to leave it in place along with other distracting objects like the trash can on the left.
Would Cropping For a Picture-Within-A-Picture Have Been A Better Treatment Choice?

These street vendors had a product that was unique to Ponta Delgada. They take a whole pineapple ... one of the island's signature crops ... and cut out the core. Then, they blend the fruit, add some sugar and serve it in the original pineapple husk (with or without a shot of their local licquer.) |

I spoke to the guys for a while about their lives and what it was like living on the island.
When I asked if it was OK to take their pictures as they worked they were happy to oblige.
They even took this shot of me.

So, when a lady and her dog showed up at the stand I was
able to take this candid snapshot.
I wouldn't say that the grimace on the lady's face when the tartness of the juice hit her is a prize-winner. But, the lines of sight and expressions on the dog and the vendor make for an interesting "second-in-time" photo.

The Point In All This?
Photography can and should be fun. I took all of these photos in just a couple hours. It was a wonderful life experience as I enjoyed my photography and the people I met.
