How To Take Pictures in

Indoor Sports Stadiums

Hi ,

Many of America's sports stadiums are indoors or covered with retractable roofs so that games can take place rain or shine; in daylight or at night.

At first glance it may seem that taking pictures under these conditions may not be ideal. But, it turns out that the stadiums are set up to make photography a breeze.

About These Pictures:

My grandson, Jonah, is an avid baseball fan. He flew down to Florida from Massachusetts to take in some pre-season Red Sox games and a couple of the Baseball World Classic games.

I attended one game with Jonah in the Miami Marlin's stadium. This was a match-up between the national teams of Israel and the Dominican Republic, with major league quality players on each side ... and lots of enthusiastic fans.

I took these photos both for fun and to use them for tips in a future newsletter.

Lighting & Technical Set-up

The Lights and White Balance On The Field Are Amazingly Good

I set my white balance on "Cloudy" and used my camera's built-in flash for this photograph.
Can you see how close the people in the foreground are in color balance (where I mixed the available lighting with the daylight color temperature of my flash) are to the even lighting on the field?

Use Fill-in Flash To Balance a Photo

With Field Lighting

Simply turn your flash to "auto." Your camera will automatically balance foreground & background exposures.

Take Casual Portraits of Fans

I walk up to people – total strangers – and politely ask them to pose. Baseball fans tend to be super-friendly and are usually

more than willing to have their pictures taken.

Look Out For "Happenings" To Get

Photos That Tell A Story

A TV video session gave me a shot that showed team

spirit ... with lots of color.

When a beauty pageant winner appeared a few rows in front of me I was able to take some decent snapshots.

Then ... the "money shot" took place a few minutes later when

she posed for press photos. All I had to do was to zoom in

with my telephoto and snap the shutter when her

beautiful smile lit up the stadium.

Shooting Game Pictures From the Stands

One of the potential problems you'll face is shooting through the protective netting.

- About all you can do is to manually focus your lens on the players. (Turn off auto focus.)
- If you look closely you'll see a slight image of the netting. But, you can probably get some decent pictures – like this one I shot at the game – without the netting being too distracting. (The net shows. But it's pretty subdued.)
If you want to capture a ball in motion or other action shots set your camera for multiple exposures. Then, just scroll through your images and pick your best ones.
