Photo Tip of the Month
Use Fill-in Flash To
Improve Your Portraits
|
|
|
Hi ,
Would you like to get better candid portraits?
Try using the flip-up flash on your camera
or a supplementary flash unit.
When you take a flash picture you're actually taking two (2) photographs in the
same frame.
- Your camera's main image is controlled by its f/stop, shutter speed & white balance. Normal exposures will be from 1/30th of a second to a few hundredths of a second.
- The flash exposure will be exposed by a bright, electronically controlled light with a duration of just thousandths of a second.
- The foreground ... flashlit picture ... will be superimposed over the natural light in the background.
Exposed properly, the "composited" foreground and background images will look totally natural! |

Built-in Camera Flash
Shooting This Stadium Photo Was Easy
1) The camera was set on aperture priority,* 2) the flash was flipped up and 3) the shutter snapped. The camera's software did all the computation for a pleasing match of foreground to background exposure.
*A "P (Program)" setting would have worked just as well. Or, the photographer could have gone on M (Manual) and adjusted the shutter speed to lighten or darken the background image. |
