Tomorrow, March 15th, marks the 230th anniversary of the Battle of
Guilford Courthouse. For most of us, we take great pride in boasting
that the turning point of the Revolutionary War took place here.
Although technically, British General Lord Cornwallis won the battle, his
troops were left battered and impotent. They limped off to the tidewater
of Virginia, where they surrendered a half year later. America had won
the War.
The Americans, were a combination of small forces. Maryland Regulars, an
experience force of soldiers, Virginia Cavalry, other State armies and the
inexperience of backwoods riflemen, the local militia, farm boys and craftsmen.
Separate Groups having individual leaders and egos. Under the leadership of
General Nathaneal Greene, they were able to put aside their differences in
coalitions. They placed their collective sites on their common foe, the threat to
their liberty, the British. They secured their place in America’s historical
fight for Independence.
Now here we are, 230 years later. A collection of individuals, groups and
interests, all with ideas and agendas that we each claim as Republican.
Regardless of what happens at the Guilford County Republican Convention
tonight and how as delegates we place our votes, I hope we refocus our sites
onto the common foe, the threat to our liberty and the prosperity of our children.
That foe is the Democratic Party and their goal of bigger, unfettered
Government.
Ronald Reagan repeated several times, “the man who agrees with you 80% of
the time is your friend and your ally. He is not your 20% enemy.” We
would be wise to remember that as we move forward from this convention.
Our collective goals should be to unify and to grow our Party on a local
level. As chairman, I will work with passion to achieve this mission. It
will require hard work, strategy, and compromise. Together we can build
our small coalitions of Republicans into a force that will be able to win
victories in the battles ahead.
Growth, Unity, and our very best efforts,
Jeff Hyde
