Following days of rocket firing, during which over 120 rockets were aimed at Israeli townships, an Israeli military jeep sustained a rocket attack in which a solider lost his eyesight, and a tunnel burrowed from Gaza into Israeli territory was discovered and destroyed, Israel responded from the air. The first attack was aimed at Ahmed Jabri - the Hamas military leader – who was killed. Israel then attacked over 20 munitions depots, military bases, rocket launchers and extensive military infrastructures. The Israeli navy targeted similar locations, and Israeli reserves were called up and units deployed near Gaza, in readiness for a ground operation if attacks do not end. Israeli troops have been instructed to exert every effort to avoid civilian casualties.
Hamas had secretly prepared over 20 rocket launch pads with long-range rockets, supplied by Iran. These were to serve as strategic responses to Israeli attacks, in the hope they would inflict unbearable damage to Israeli cities. Israel destroyed most of these. However, some were hidden in the premises of schools and hospitals, which Israel has declined to attack at this stage. However, a strict warning was issued: Israel's response to the firing of long-range missiles will be terse, firm and immediate.
Until further notice, schools are closed to be in Israel's south, and the public has been put on alert.

In the course of the last 24 hours, Hamas fired over 100 rockets toward nearby Israeli cities. Most of the rockets were intercepted and destroyed by Israel's Iron Dome anti-rocket defense system. Israel continued to attack from the air, focusing on launching pads for medium-range rockets. Rockets fired into Be'er Sheba damaged vehicles. No bodily injuries were sustained and damage to property is minimal. European countries expressed their hope for "an end to violence."
The White House announced its unreserved support of Israel's right of self-defense. Hamas, on the one hand, threatened a "severe response," and on the other seeks Egypt's help in ending "Israel's unjustified attack." Egypt's President, Morsi, castigated Israel for "unprovoked violence." Israeli police and all security forces have been deployed and put on extreme alert against suicide attacks, kidnapping and other terrorist activities. The Israeli public has also been asked to be watchful.
This time, there will be no updates on my website. All updates will be made on my FaceBook page. Should events justify, I will produce further bulletins, to be sent to all MaozNews subscribers. Please spread the word and encourage others to pray. Pray for sufferers on both sides, and for an end to violence. Pray for a change of heart in the Middle East, an honest willingness to negotiate and to compromise - and for a real peace.
Sincere thanks are due to all who have responded, sought to encourage and promised to pray. It is not possible for me to respond to each of your personally, but each of your responses are read and are very welcome.
On this occasion I commend and thank Mr. Max Sharp for his faithful management of my financial account until his recent retirement. Berean Baptist Church, on whose behalf Max acted, does not charge an administrative fee and has made its administrative resources available to me with much goodwill. I am grateful to Berean Baptist and to it Pastor, Robert Dickie, for this kindness. Mrs. Craig Cooper has now assumed Max’s role.
