Stonefly Mania with Nick Wheeler
The famous Deschutes Stonefly hatch is known across the land but sometimes it can be a little frustrating. Hatching timing, weather and water temperatures can all change your experience on the the water. We’ll discuss all they ways to give you your best opportunity to find fish, from pre hatch to post hatch we’ll up those odds. So if your a new anglers fishing the hatch for their first time or a seasoned veteran your sure to pick up some new tricks to make your fishing experience better. Let me share my knowledge and experience on the water to help you plan a better day on the Deschutes for the salmonfly hatch.
About Nick
Nick Wheeler has been working in the fishing industry for 20 years helping anglers become better educated. From on the water classes and guiding to helping pick out the right size wader Nick has been one of those smiling faces you’ve seen behind the counter at The Portland Fly Shop. Nick started his pursuit fly fishing in the hills of Northern California but for over the last 12 years he has been living here in the Pacific Northwest. Known for being the shad master his knowledge doesn’t stop there, chasing steelhead, salmon, trout, and bass, he leaves no stone unturned in his pursuits.

Kid's free fishing day at Small Fry Pond is Saturday, June 7th from 9-1:00. This is a popular event that gets many young anglers on the water for their first time! We will need 4-10 volunteers to help with activities during the day from check-in to fishing assistance.

Do you know a budding young angler that wants to learn about fishing and how watersheds work? Send them to us for our 2025 Youth Fly Fishing and Conservation Camp. Boys and Girls ages 10-14 are welcome in our camp for 4 days and 3 nights of fly fishing fun! $250/camper.
Camp is June 26-29.
