When we look at the benefits of Yoga poses, these don’t always have to be standing or complicated poses. There are many very simple stretches which can really help with our day to day aches and pains. Gomukhasana arms is really great for those of us who work on a computer, as our posture often becomes hunched putting a lot of stress on the neck and shoulder area. This pose really opens up the shoulder and chest area, counter acting that hunched upper back position from working on the computer.
The pose can be done sitting at our office desk or at home in the evening. Something interesting to note when you do this stretch is if one side of your body is tighter than the other, can you only bind your hands on one side? This is very normal for most of us.
How to do the pose:
Firstly, you want to extend your left arm up toward the sky with your palm facing forward. Then, bend your left elbow and bring your left hand behind your back to position it on your spine.
The arm which is reaching behind needs to draw upward along your lower to mid spine.
Roll your shoulders back and try to reach the arms towards each other so that your hands can grasp each other, creating a bind.
Your left elbow should be in line with your ear.
Hold the pose for up to one minute, remembering to breath slowly and close your eyes. Then gently release the arms and repeat on the other side.
