Beijing Auto Show Visuals & Recap - SAI Newsletter #38

We are just getting off our National Day/Mid-Autumn festival holiday so we will resume the normal newsletter format next week.
I did want to send some pics I took of the auto show and give my quick take since there's already a TON of coverage out there on the interwebs. If you didn't notice, the pics are mostly of Chinese brands since those were the ones that had most of the MAJOR announcements, and generally the larger stands.
I can't think of ANY significant announcements from the foreign traditional OEMs that would move the needle for them so the show definitely had a China/EV showcase vibe.
You can also see a significant difference between traditional OEMs interiors when compared with their Chinese (EV) counterparts, namely the liberal use of touchscreens and LCDs for the latter.

It looks like I will also be participating in a couple of events this month, the first being a deeper dive recap of the BJAS that's being sponsored by the Shanghai American Chamber of Commerce on October 20th. It'll be a Zoom format which I will send details for next week. I'll have details about the other event which will likely be in-person in Shanghai towards the end of the month so stay tuned for more details.
News will likely pick up next week again as well since it's been relatively quiet due to all the big announcements from BJAS and the holiday.
Overall, I was impressed by the China EV startups as most of their vehicles fit/finish generally has improved since I last really scrutinized them. There were a few brands like Enovate, Seres, Arcfox, Ora that surprised me with their stands since they've not sold in any significant numbers yet. I'd heard that a couple of those brands were really having challenges putting any scratch together to maintain operations. This makes sense since Li Auto, NIO, XPeng, WM Motor, and Evergrande have really hoovered up a lot of investment dollars with all their recent capital raises, and IPOs.
Finally, as most of you know the BJAS will be the ONLY live auto show in the world this year. It was crowded but not AS crowded as we've seen in the past and masks were worn but by most people including the car models which was a bit surreal.
Here's to hoping that the rest of the world can get COVID-19 under control enough so that the major auto shows around the world can get back on track as well.
