Tricks for Treats
February 14th and October 31st are two dates very near and dear to every sweet tooth's heart. While it is fun to indulge in the ooey-gooey chocolatey sweetness of it all, we have to remember that we are what we digest! Every cell in our bodies is affected by what we decide to put into our mouths. Here are some helpful hints so you can enjoy your treats and your body won't feel tricked!
1. Sort & Stow. As soon as you and your children get home from trick or treating, sort the candy that can be eaten that week. Stow the rest away in a non-visible place, so you’re not tempted by your eyes to indulge. Do this every week until the candy is gone, or until you finally throw it out.
2. Don't Snack on the Candy. Treat it like the TREAT it is, and only eat it at the end of a well-balanced meal. This will ensure that you at least supply your body with the sustenance it needs before you give in to what it wants. (Take this tip even further by setting a cut-off time for when you can and can’t indulge, such as saying 7pm to 7am is off limits).
3. Purchase Smarter Sweets. When purchasing candy to give away, look for items with dark chocolate and nuts. Dark chocolate has antioxidant properties which keep our hearts happy. Many nuts have antioxidants and ”good fats" that serve as protective barriers and building blocks for various cells of the body.
4. Give & Take. For all the extra candy you will be consuming, your body will need help in detoxifying and digesting it. Help your body out by increasing the water and fiber you take in. Add a glass of water or an extra helping of vegetables (especially the dark green leafy ones) for every day you enjoy your sweet treats.
5. Don't Replace It! After bingeing on candy for days and weeks, I know it will be hard to resist purchasing “just one more” from the store (especially since it is sure to be on sale). However, use this relapse time to re-train your sweet tooth. Whenever you get that craving, try dipping fruit in organic agave nectar. Fruit is nature’s dessert, and it is more pleasant to your body than the manufactured treats we all know so well. |
