Welcome to the first edition of the OPENHIVE newsletter. The theme of this month’s newsletter is ‘engagement’, from teachers engaging individual learners and their parents, to schools engaging with their wider communities.
2010 brings fresh prospects and new ideas. OPENHIVE news aims to promote and share best practice within the education community. If you’re experimenting or advancing your ICT send us your story and we’ll share it amongst our readers here. Tell us what you think of this first issue, we welcome your feedback.

The new parent guarantee When it comes to online reporting the word 'expectation' has changed to 'guarantee'. The ‘parent guarantee’, coming into effect in September 2010, will ensure that schools work with parents and guardians as full partners in their child's learning and wider development. Hawes Side Primary School kids engage parents The first to be awarded the Gold standard by EPRA, Hawes Side Primary School has launched a school blog - run for the kids, by the kids. Children as young as 5 and 6 are blogging about their schoolwork and learning activities to engage parents and the wider community. This video is one to watch!
New powers for parents and local authorities Ed Balls and Gordon Brown announced new plans to enable outstanding leaders to run chains of secondary schools through federations, trust schools and Academies. By 2015 every school will have the opportunity to join a 'chain'. Read more.
6 more BSF projects given the green light Six more local authorities across England have been given the green light to join the national Building Schools for the Future Programme to rebuild or refurbish secondary schools in their area. Read more.

Meet the team! It’s always good to put a face to a name, so we thought it’d be a nice touch to introduce our team to you. First up is Julie Durrant, one of our Account Managers.
Who is Julie?
Who is Julie? Well she has worked within ICT and Education for almost 15 years, consulting on MIS systems, infrastructure and networks and learning platforms. A Governor for 10 years at a large Technology College in Birmingham, Julie holds many other roles such as Chair of Finance, member of the Ofsted Taskforce Group and parent to two boys.
