This month, Military Families United is excited to announce that we have begun updating and modernizing the Gold Star Family Registry! The redesigned website will not only have the search functions it currently provides, but will also have additional multimedia components for Hero tributes, will provide Gold Star family members the ability to connect with one another, and will encourage teachers, students, and all Americans to learn about these brave Heroes for generations to come.
Thank you for entrusting Military Families United with the honor of sharing your Hero's story.

Virginia Memorial Ceremony and Luncheon, May 24
Military Families United and the Travis Manion Foundation have partnered to bring Virginia Gold Star families together on May 24 in honor of all fallen Heroes from the Commonwealth. The event will feature Ms. Donna Engeman, MFU Advisory Council Member and Survivor Outreach Services Program Manager for the Army's Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command, and Commander Kirk S.Lippold, MFU Board Member and the Commander of the USS Cole when it was attacked in 2000. Families from around Virginia have been invited to attend the Ceremony which will be followed by an informal lunch.
This Ceremony will not only honor the sacrifice of these brave Heroes, but the families whom they have left behind. The Ceremony will also highlight the National Gold Star Family Registry and help raise awareness of the Gold Star pin awarded to families who have lost a loved one in combat. If you have any questions regarding this event, please contact Brynn@MilitaryFamiliesUnited.org.

| Honoring Our Fallen Heroes: 1st Lt. Travis Manion |
|
Travis Joseph Lemma Manion was born November 19, 1980, in Camp Lejeune, NC, to an active duty Marine family. After settling in Doylestown, PA, Travis went on to LaSalle College High School where his strong leadership qualities set him apart both athletically and academically... Upon his graduation in 2004, Travis chose to follow his father into the Marine Corps. He finished in the top of his class at The Basic School where he was awarded a regular commission in the Marine Corps... Travis deployed back to Iraq on December 26, 2006, for his second tour as part of a Military Transition Team... During his final patrol mission on Sunday, April 29, 2007, Travis was killed by enemy sniper fire while fighting courageously to defend against an enemy ambush... As a testament to his strong character and leadership, the Iraqis named their operating base Combat Outpost (COB) Manion, one of only a few Iraqi facilities named for an American service member. Travis was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star w/ Valor for his actions in Iraq. To learn more about 1st Lt. Manion and to read this Tribute on the National Gold Star Family Registry in its entirety, please Click Here. |

| The National Military Family Bereavement Study |
The National Military Family Bereavement Study is the first scientific study (Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program) of the impact of a U.S. service member death on surviving family members. The research is being conducted by Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress in Bethesda, Maryland. This study will seek to study the impact of a service member death on his or her family of origin and their family of procreation. Given the unique nature of military family life, the study will investigate the impact of community support and services on the bereaved and how available resources impact resilience or vulnerability in surviving families. Finally, this study will build on the growing evidence addressing the intersection of grief and trauma and how its affects a military family member's bereavement process, needs for support and assistance.
Military Families United will be collaborating on this study along with other Gold Star and Survivor organizations. We will share additional details, including how to participate, over the next few months. To learn more, click here. |
