Written and directed by Colin Higgins ( Harold and Maude,  Foul Play),  9 to 5 is story of three female office employees who endure a daily assault of sexual harassment, conservative and ineffective company policies, and a dreary and sterile office environment courtesy of the narcissistic Mr. Heart (played by Dabney Coleman, bringing his slimy best to the role) before finally taking matters into their own hands. Far more than just a humorous dark comedy, this groundbreaking film pointedly addresses issues such as the pressures of being a single working mother, conservative America’s defiance against more advance office policies (flexible hours, personalized work space, a colorful and bright work environment) that many progressive companies and countries have shown actually increase productivity and business, and ultimately, the face of machismo and inappropriate sexual behavior that existed eleven years before Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas brought the term “sexual harassment” into the mainstream.
