Next Thursday, June 2nd, CineMOLAA comes to the Art Theatre for the first time with PURGATORIO!
PURGATORIO Featuring live Q&A with Roberto Rochin
We are proud and excited to bring CineMOLAA, our collaboration with Museum of Latin American Art, to The Art Theatre! Join us Thursday, June 2nd for the Long Beach premiere of PURGATORIO, winner of the Free Spirit Award at the Warsaw International Film Festival, and official selection of over one dozen film festivals worldwide. **Director Roberto Rochin will be at the screening in person to discuss his film and answer questions from the audience after the screening.** An adaptation of three novellas by celebrated author Juan Rulfo, the stories in Purgatorio are connected by the character of Don Julio, an old man living alone in a hacienda slowly being consumed by developing Mexico City in the 1950′s. He escapes from his surroundings by diving into his memories, which involve the story of a man who leaves his family in search of better luck, a gravedigger and a prostitute who find love only to have it tested by fate, and Don Julio’s remorse after the departure of his beloved Cleotilde, who he initially married out of convenience. Stories of love, loss, and fate are interwoven with themes of political and socioeconomic evolution, and as is integral in Rochin’s works, a celebration of Mexico’s rich history and culture. Advance tickets now on sale - click here! PURGATORIO is a Spanish-language film, with English subtitles. The poignancy of dashed hopes and the simplicity of human survival will always make the stuff of drama, as will a last chance at love. This gentle comedy is about the relationship of two aging African-American, church-going sisters and what happens when a handsome young fellow, newly arrived from the deep south, rents a room in the apartment they share. "A gentle, sweet-natured comedy." - New York Times
