Botanical Plant Name:
Pontederia cordata
The pretty and prolific pickerelweed is a North American native aquatic perennial that withstands fresh or brackish water. It is an emergent, or marginal, aquatic plant and prefers to be immersed in water a foot deep or less. Its large leaves are oval, linear or triangular; flowers are lavender-blue and borne on upright spikes held above the foliage. Pickerelweed is very easy to grow if given full sun and rooted in mucky soil covered with a shallow layer of water. It tends to spread by creeping underground stems, so plant it where it can naturalize. If you wish to control its spread, submerse it in pots.
