What’s Happening At Hidden Secrets
This Month's Note From Bob
Owner at Hidden Secrets Book Covers®
We have received dozens of requests to make covers for the Kindle, Sony, and Nook e-book readers. In last month’s newsletter we started a series of articles on e-readers. I had told you we don’t make covers for them, and promised to tell you more this month. So here’s the story of...
60,000 Reasons Why We Don't Make
E-Reader Covers Anymore
At the Romantic Times Convention in 2007, the product manager for the Sony e-Reader asked me to make covers for their new e-Reader coming out later that year. He gave me the prototype, and we diligently went about designing our prototype cover to send on to Sony. In the interim, Sony had changed their product manager, and the new manager would not return a phone call or email.
We then took the Sony covers to the Romantic Times Convention in April 2008, hoping to at least make a little return for our time and efforts. When we got to the convention we found that Sony had increased the height of the e-Reader by 3/8”, and it was too tall to fit into the covers we had manufactured from their original prototype. Fortunately, we had only made a few dozen covers that had to be thrown away.
Around December 2007, Amazon introduced the Kindle I. Having been introduced for the holidays, they sold out within a few days. We ordered a Kindle I in January and received it in February. The Kindle 1 had a major design flaw. Their reader would fall out of the cover because the latching mechanism was poorly designed. Kindles don’t bounce very well off the floor, and Amazon received thousands of complaints and much negative feedback across the internet.
So we went to work designing our cover that solved the fallout problem and sold about 50 before Amazon announced the Kindle II. Of course, the Kindle II was a different size and had an excellent, patented latching system. Would anyone like a Kindle 1 cover? We have several and will sell them for less than cost.
On the bright side, we still make wonderful covers for BOOKS. Thanks to you, we recently sold our 60,000th book cover. We really appreciate your business, your referrals, and your wonderful support.
Thank you, and join us next month for Part Two…
See you next time,
Bob Mize

Are E-Books Cost Effective?
The Pros and Cons of E-Books
JD Roth, at Get Rich Slowly, guides you through the pros and cons of e-Readers, and talks about a love for books along the roads traveled.
It’s great to be able to have many books in a small “container”. It’s awesome, really — like living in the future. To the extent that e-books help me reduce clutter, I love them. But I’m not wholly sold on e-books yet for one very simple reason: cost. Buying e-books usually isn’t cost-effective. Not for me, anyhow....
