What’s Happening At Hidden Secrets
This Month's Note From Bob
Owner at Hidden Secrets Book Covers®
For those of you who don’t know, my wife, Mary Candace, and I purchased Hidden Secrets in February, 2004. At that time we sold wholesale only to businesses, primarily to independent bookstores. We are a small family-owned business, and I am the only full time employee who does everything except sew. Mary Candace picks the patterns and helps with shipping. We have two seamstresses who have disabilities that prevent them from holding full time jobs. They sew at home with industrial sewing machines. They work as much as their disabilities allow them to work on their own schedule. We have a retired couple, one with severe disabilities, who do the finish work.
In 2006 we added our Retail website. We had received many requests to sell retail online from readers who did not live near any of our bookstore customers. The decline in the economy, the rise of Amazon.com, and the introduction of e-readers, have really hurt the bookstore business, as evidenced by the closing of independent book stores, Borders, Walden Books, and many Hastings stores. Our sales to bookstores were declining. It was clear that we needed to add a retail website.
It took a great deal of learning and time to develop the retail website, but it has been well worth the effort. This January we started this monthly newsletter to let you know about us, plus what we hope are interesting articles about the book industry. You seem to enjoy the newsletter because we set a record for retail sales in January and February. Thank you for your support and business.
This month we will start a series of newletter articles about the e-readers like the Kindle and Nook. We have had many requests to make covers for the various e-readers. We actually made covers for the Sony and Kindle I. It was a disaster. I’ll tell that story next month. Below is an interesting article about e-readers and some of the pitfalls they present to their owners.
Thanks again for your support,
See you next time,
Bob Mize

Emlyn Chand, On her Blog, guides you through the ins and outs of starting up a reading group through the ever-changing world of social media.
So you have decided you are going to start a book club. You have identified the niche that will make your group special, now what? People are the impetus for any successful book group, not just finding the right people, but also developing a system for keeping everyone connected and on the same page.
There you stand, book in hand, eager to set up a discussion. How will you find people to join in and prevent you from being that crazy lady talking to herself in the coffee shop? Recruiting members is not dissimilar to finding a book club to join...
