NPR reviewed her album and compares her to Van Dyke Parks, New York jazz wit Blossom Dearie and Dorothy Parker. However, she also managed to acquire a familiarity with the work of Billy Joel, Elton John, Barry Manilow and a raft of ’80 power-pop artists during the long bus commute to and from school, during which the driver played Top 40 radio. “I was also a choir dork and band dork,” she volunteers. She wrote her first song at 14, for her boyfriend, recalling, “It was horrible – future blackmail material.”
Oberg studied piano at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, then impulsively moved to San Francisco, where she remained for two years. She started to develop her live presence there but didn’t play out much during her subsequent two years in Austin or the first part of her lengthy tenure in Nashville. A fan of Hank Williams and Merle Haggard, she formed a band called Honky-Tonk Happy Hour, showcasing her “twisted old-school country drinking songs” on the 2001 album You Drank My Backwash, her first real foray into recording.
Around that time Oberg debuted another project, the “jazz-ish” cabaret act Blossom Theory, with drummer Allen Lowry. The duo was named in honor of another of Oberg’s influences, mid-century jazz pianist and singer Blossom Dearie. “She was my first real cabaret inspiration,” says Oberg. “I was drawn to the disarming vulnerability in her voice, and she was a very good piano player.” READ THE WHOLE BIO HERE
