Kristina Olsson is the best-selling author of the memoir
Boy, Lost. Next Wednesday
she'll be talking to Steven Lang about her new novel,
Shell, a big, bold and hauntingly beautiful story that captures a defining moment in Australia’s history.
It is Sydney, 1965, and Danish architect Jørn Utzon’s striking vision for the Sydney Opera House has begun to transform the skyline, unleashing a storm of controversy, as, all the while, the shadow of the Vietnam War and a deadly lottery threaten to tear the country apart.
Viewed through the eyes of two unforgettable characters caught in the eye of the storm,
Shell captures a world on the brink of seismic change.
‘Shell
is a brilliant and beautiful novel, full of lyrical grace and sensitive observation. There’s a special joy in its attention to creativity, family love and the complex dignity of labour. And at its centre: the Sydney Opera House; not simply an icon, but reimagined as art object, aspiration, and a kind of international dream ...’ Gail Jones
‘
A beautifully crafted novel about a fascinating time in our history. There is a luminous precision in every sentence.’ Heather Rose
‘
This narrative of war and hope, the old and the new world, makes Shell a novel of energy and enlightenment, and, to boot, a source of delightful reading.’ Tom Keneally

And, Introducing,
Josepha Dietrich |
|
|
Our introducing author will be Josepha Dietrich, speaking about her memoir,
In Danger.
When Josie was 21, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fifteen years later, after her mother’s death, the disease reared up in Josie’s own cells. She was, by then, a mother herself, and her high-needs son was not yet one.
As the daughter of a woman who had sought out alternatives to conventional medicine, Josie used her own knowledge and her mother’s experience to find solutions for herself.
Capturing Josie’s energy and force-of-nature personality,
In Danger tells of her journey through breast cancer, exploring disease and the human condition, and shedding light on life’s darker aspects. At its heart, this moving memoir delves deep into how it feels when everything you love is in danger.
‘In Danger
is much more than a breast cancer memoir – though it covers that territory eloquently and courageously. It is also an insightful meditation on the push and pull of mother-daughter relationships, on what we inherit through blood and example.’ Kristina Olsson.
