Fewer Billionaires in the World
| You're less likely to see the ungodly rich renting out the best resort in the country for a destination wedding this year. Only 793 people made the most recent Forbes billionaires list, down from 1,125 last year.
Mexico's Carlos Slim is #3 on the list, though his fortune declined by 25 billion last year. Unfortunately Mexico's cocaine king (and most wanted man) also made the list.
Where do their kids hang out? Along with clubs and charity events in the likes of Cannes and the Hamptons, an accompanying article pegged the pool at the Copacabana Hotel in Rio as a hotspot. We'll have a review of that hotel going up next month as we kick off our Brazil section.

A Less Frenetic Real Estate Market
| For a look at how the worldwide economic slump is affecting real estate in retiree markets, check out our article, Crisis May Strengthen Boquete, Panama's Real Estate Market .
Agencies and builders in Boquete see mostly positives in the current slowdown. Business is still good, but not so crazy good that unqualified, underfinanced developers can continue. Price increases can take a breather and real buyers will be the customers, not speculators. This is a healthy development in their eyes and this is a lesson that can probably be applied to other markets that were clearly overheated, such as Puerto Vallarta, the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, and Roatan Island.
