Louis W. Sullivan, MD, PhD
Morehouse School of Medicine
Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, was founding dean and founding president of Morehouse School of Medicine. Dr. Sullivan served as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services from 1989-1993. As a member of the president's cabinet, Dr. Sullivan was responsible for the major health, welfare, food and drug safety, medical research and income security programs serving the American people. His efforts to improve the health and health behavior of Americans included establishing the office that became the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, inaugurating the Women's Health Research Program at NIH, introducing an improved Food and Drug Administration food label, and launching a $100 million minority male health and injury prevention initiative.
David Satcher, MD, PhD
Satcher Health Leadership Institute
David Satcher, MD, PhD is Founding Director and Senior Advisor of The Satcher Health Leadership Institute which was established in 2006 at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Satcher was sworn in as the 16th Surgeon General of the United States in February 1998 and served until 2002. He also served as the 10th Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services making him only the second person in history to have held both positions simultaneously. His tenure of public service also includes serving as Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Administrator of the Toxic Substances and Disease Registry from 1993 to 1998. He was the first person to have served as Director of the CDC and Surgeon General of the United States.
