NOT just preventing pregnancy

Education: “Emergency contraception” refers to methods (Plan B “morning after” pill or insertion of an IUD) used after intercourse has taken place, to prevent a pregnancy from resulting from that intercourse. Depending on the method, it may be effective up to 3 to 5 days after intercourse. If ovulation has not yet occurred, it may be prevented. However, if ovulation is either already occurred or is not prevented, the method also acts to prevent implantation of the newly conceived child. Proponents of the pill say that it has “no effect on pregnancy” and will prevent abortions by preventing unwanted pregnancies.

Keep in mind, however, that these people are defining pregnancy as beginning at implantation rather than conception. Pharmacists for Life International states that “Numerous studies support the notion that the high dose, high-powered steroid(s) found in Emergency Abortion Drugs like Plan B are abortifacient 75 to 89% of the time.”(1) Women and girls (15 yrs. old and older) can buy the pills (such as “Plan B”) over the counter, and sexually active women are encouraged to keep the pills on hand. It is impossible to know how many children’s’ lives have been and are still being lost from the use of these methods. In fact, today's low dose birth control pills can allow ovulation to occur 25-35% of the time. (2) If ovulation occurs, conception may occur as well, and one method of action of any hormonal contraceptive is to prevent implantation.

Prayer: Dear Lord, have mercy on women who have engaged in intercourse without being open to the gift of life. Help them to understand the truth that so-called “emergency contraception” can in fact end the life of a child already conceived. Help them to better understand your beautiful plan for sexuality and consider the practice of chastity. For women who have been victimized by rape, please comfort them with your grace and help them to put their trust in You. Help all women who feel burdened by an unwanted pregnancy to look to You for support and strength, and find concrete help from pregnancy centers staffed with Christian volunteers who are living your love for them. |

Action: Ask your pharmacist if he is aware of the abortifacient nature of hormonal birth control. Does he inform women purchasing these drugs of that action, as well as of their serious health risks? Plan B is available over the counter for ages 15 and up, but how is the age restriction controlled? How does he feel about providing drugs that can kill very young children? Has he considered refusing to sell these products on the basis of conscientious objection? Tell him about Pharmacists for Life International (www.pfli.org).
