The Last Full Moon in June
Join us in Elkford BC on the June 25-26th weekend for the 13th and FINAL Full Moon in June. That's right - this one will be the last. This was a really hard decision to make considering that FMIJ has been a labour of love and a cornerstone of adventure racing in Canada for over a decade. We always said that we would keep doing the race as long as people kept on showing up. Each year it is more and more difficult to attract teams and after last year we discussed not hosting the race anymore because of the decline in attendance. We know there is a dedicated group of competitors, so we wanted to give it one more year.
If you look at the statistics, long races in Canada are becoming a rarity because the demand has been dropping consistently since 2005. There were only around five races over 24 hours in Canada last year and none of them had more than approximately 20 teams. We do not cut corners on our events and lower numbers make it very challenging to offer the experience that we want to provide. In contrast, short races, like Half Moon in August, are doing extremely well.
We pride ourselves in producing top quality events and we promise that the last Full Moon will be one to remember. We have tried a lot of fun things over the years and we're scheming away on how to make this race even more unique. The community in Elkford is very supportive of events like FMIJ and the area is perfect for what we want to do. The course is going to be tough, which is what you expect from us. Every year we spend countless hours researching and verifying the FMIJ course and this will be no exception. The scenery is spectacular and the journey will be magnificent. We just wish we could race this one ourselves.
We have not made any decisions about what, if anything, we are going to do instead of the Full Moon in June. We have some ideas and we would love to hear from the racing community as to what they would like to see in 2012. We will continue to run the Half Moon and the Sinister 7, both of which are doing very well. Once we make up our minds about what we are going to do in 2012, you will be the first to know.

FMAC Achieves Two Awards
Thank you to everyone who voted for us in the Get Out There Magazine's Readers' Choice Award. I am pleased to tell you that for the second year in a row, the Sinister 7 has won for "Best Running Event - Western Canada".
This is really important to us because we were selected by you, the
people who matter, not a random committee. Thank you for your support
and I promise that we will work to earn this award year after year.
The second award actually came before Christmas from the Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce. The Full Moon Adventure Company was awarded with "Best New Business of the Year 2010"
for relocating our business here and bringing our vibrant events to the
area. Our community is behind what we do and
you will see that reflected in the people you meet down here during the Sinister 7 and other races we do in the region. |
Half Moon in August Filling Up
The Half Moon is already 20% full. We usually see a swell in the numbers going into March so be sure to sign up early.
The race around the Oldman River and Reservoir region will be reminiscent of the Half Moon we held in Drumheller way back in 2003, which many people tell us was their favorite race ever. While you might think you will be racing on bald prairie, that could not be farther from the truth. The HMIA will be a mad-capped adventure in the rolling hills, forests, and coulees that surround the Oldman.
Heritage Acres is incredibly excited to host the event. We are excited to have found such a unique venue hidden away in our own backyard. |
Get Outside!
I hope we will see you at the races this year. In the meantime, enjoy the winter and get ready for a great season of racing.
Best Regards,
Brian Gallant & Andrew Fairhurst
