Local Ceramic Artists Collaborate on Breaking Ground at the Flood Gallery
Nine local Asheville ceramic artists will be exhibiting at the Flood Gallery, at 850 Blue Ridge Rd, in Black Mountain, that opens on June 8th from 6pm to 9pm. The exhibition features the works of Trista Hudzik, Eric Haagensen, Sonja Hernandez, Joey Sheehan, Melissa Pace, Brock Flamion, Luba Sharapan, Christine Thomas, and Celia Barbieri.
Breaking Ground is a coming together of ceramic art and functional pottery. From expressive hand made wall hangings that are certain to stir the critical thinking process to the sculpture of stoic faces that might inspire a familiar experience or memory. Beautiful, whimsical mugs, cups, plates and vases made for everyday use and meant to coax a smile or encourage a laugh. Wondrous flowers made with clay and buttons, visions of graffiti, hedgehogs, aliens and tattoo imagery pleasingly loud with color and sure to beckon.

The Greenblues to Perform at the Flood Gallery, July 9th
The Greenblues are a duet whose spectrum include blues, ballads, mantras, chants and more. They will be performing at the Flood Gallery Fine Art Center, July 9th from 7pm to 9pm, located at 850 Blue Ridge Rd, in Black Mountain , NC.
Greeenblues brings a message of world thought, and is often seasoned with eastern and African musical stylings. Many traditions are blended into a unique eclectic style, creating a very original kaleidoscope of sound, while maintaining the intimacy of a duet. The group consists of: Ashley Rae - vocals & percussion and Mike Gilmore - guitars, bouzouki & hand drums
Mike Gilmore started playing guitar at age 4. In his late teens and early twenties he began playing and studying world music and jazz, focusing on music from India and Africa. Shortly after, he began his journey as a recording and touring musician. Mike's discography includes over 20 releases. Perhaps he is best known for his vibraphone and marimba work with The Northwoods Improvisers, especially their collaborations with the late, great Detroit saxophonist Faruq Z. Bey. This group released ten recordings including one DVD from 2000-2012. Mike has also been featured on many projects including a solo release featuring the Turkish saz, titled "Soaring Hawk" (2000). He has also played, recorded and toured with numerous musicians and bands, playing guitars, bouzouki, guzheng and hand drums, including a cd and tours with poet Gordon Henry and bassist Mike Johnston (2013). Mike's most recent release is an eastern world music project called "Inscribe" (2019).
Ashley Rae sang in church & school choirs as a child, and into her teens. In high school, she played trombone for several years. As the daughter of an artist and a musician who exposed her to rock bands of the 1960's & 70's, and having regularly heard big band, swing, and crooner music of the 30's, 40's and 50's from her grandparents, she was steeped in the sounds of these generations. Additionally, growing up in the 80's & 90's with a strong interest in British and American alternative rock, heavy metal, grunge and experimental groups, she developed a truly eclectic taste in music. In her late teens and twenties, her interests expanded to include Native American, Ethiopian, eastern music, jazz and the blues. She was particularly "hooked" on the voice and rhythmic trance of John Lee Hooker. Ashley has sung in punk, reggae, rock & roll, rockabilly and acapella groups. She believes that music is an essential part of human life, and sees art and music as forms of healing, pleasure and powerful expression. Her studies in art, yoga and energy healing have helped shape the concepts she brings to the music.
