Dear Fellow Bichon Lovers,
Last week I received this photo of a little guy, under 10 pounds and a bit more than a year old, standing on a concrete slab barely able to see through the hair over his eyes. But that was the least of his problems. He was in a less-than- wonderful shelter with a broken leg (they said it was injured at the time.) We asked for x-rays and were told there were none … however if we would commit to rescuing him they would take x-rays. (Kind of a chicken-and-egg scenario.) We know that repairing broken legs is a very expensive procedure and we needed to know the extent of his injuries before deciding if we could rescue him.
And I tried and I tried to walk away, hoping another rescue group would take him. As it got closer to his ‘deadline’ date they contacted me again and, ultimately, agreed to have x-rays taken. The shelter staff told us that they could splint his back leg in hopes that it would heal by itself – and they did. That would allow us to not have to enter into surgery and the hope was that the little guy would heal… on his own.
A fellow rescuer was kind enough to pick up the little ball of fluff (whom we decided to call Wiggles) and get him to us– so we could clean him up a bit and get him to his foster’s home.
We found a wonderful family to foster him (Lynda and Martin Schubert and their children) and were off and running.
Then I got a call from the groomer who said she thought the shelter had splinted the wrong leg - that his left leg was in a splint and the right one was simply hanging. You can imagine the horror of that – Wiggles was trying to balance himself on the broken leg! At no time however did this little guy whimper or complain - he simply made the best of the situation. In fact he tried to walk with the splint on the wrong leg so he would ‘do his business’ outside.

Daria Roth, a volunteer and Board member, dropped everything to pick up Wiggles from the groomer - and rushed him to our vet. They confirmed that the WRONG LEG HAD BEEN SPLINTED and he needed surgery ASAP on the right leg!!!
Foster Mom Lynda says to tell you that Wiggles is: Very gentle and sweet!, likes to snuggle in his blanket, is yery quiet, likes children, would never bite, will always wag his tail no matter how bad he feels, loves to cuddle, is not a chewer or barker, gets long great and likes other dogs and listens well to verbal commands.
She says Wiggles, while a gentle soul, is a fighter who doesn't give up – and gives her a little lick as to say thank you every time she takes him outside or gives him a treat.
Wiggles is schedule for surgery tomorrow. This was unplanned but necessary. Can you please help us to help Wiggles? Any donation would be appreciated. You can either go to our Donations page and use PayPal, email me that you are sending a check or send a check directly to BFK at 6965 El Camino Real, #105-425, La Costa, CA 92009.
From the bottom of our hearts we thank you for helping Wiggles
