Finding A Home For Destiny |
In the animal shelter world you get a lot of sweet critters that could use a little training or have special requirements in order to be successful in their new furrever homes. This was most definitely the case with our lovely Destiny. As a 2 ½ year old Springer Spaniel Mix, Destiny was a spirited, ball of energy, that was picky about her other canine cousins, so we knew she needed a home that would take her out for exercise and not have any other dogs. |
Destiny came to the Snake River Animal Shelter in December 2018 from the Pocatello Animal Shelter in hopes to find her a home for the Holidays but no such luck. This great little girl struggled to impress her future family for 4-months until the young adults

from a local group home fell in love with her. The group home had multiple dog loving residents that would help Destiny have plenty of exercise and attention but they had to get all of the resident’s families to agree to the adoption. It took weeks to get all of the families to agree and while that process was happening the residents came in to the shelter twice a day to take Destiny for walks and spend time with her. We had never seen a more dedicated group of people so committed to loving a pup. Destiny is one lucky girl with the adoration of a very special family. She now resides with this extraordinary group of individuals from all walks of life and lots of kindness to offer her in her new permanent home. |

When spring cleaning is all done consider what you will do with all that extra space! Is there room in your home for a friendly feline and her kittens? Spring time is kitten season and we could use your help. The Snake River Animal Shelter is looking for kitten fosters before there is no more room at the shelter. Fosters are provided with all of the supplies for the animals plus all the cuddling love from our thankful furry friends that you could ask for. There are few things more fulfilling than helping an animal in need. If you would like to sign up to be an SRAS foster just e-mail Geri Magnuson, Foster Coordinator, at

Annual Rummage Sale has moved dates and location |
SRAS has done an annual rummage sale fundraiser for the animals for more than a decade and typically it has been in April. Not this year! This year’s annual rummage sale will be held at the Pinecrest Event Center (560 E Anderson St, Idaho Falls, ID 83401) on Saturday, July 20th from 8am- 3pm. Mark your calendar and rummage for the cause! |
We write a lot of grants to serve the animals at the Snake River Animal Shelter. After years of trying we were pleasantly surprised when the Petco Foundation awarded SRAS a grant for $40,000! This is an incredible confirmation of the impact that SRAS is making in the animal welfare world because Petco grants money based off of an investment algorithm much like what a financial advisor uses to guide investors. This means SRAS passed a huge barrier and is deemed worthy of their investment and we are so excited to have the Petco Foundation invest in our life saving efforts. |

Idaho Offers New License Plates to help Spay/Neuter Pets
Hooray, Idaho is now offering a Pet Friendly License Plate! Proceeds from the sale of the plate will be deposited once a
year from the Idaho State Treasurer’s Office into the Pet Lovers Fund. This will be a restricted use fund maintained and administered by the Idaho Humane

Society in Boise. The Idaho Humane Society has volunteered to hold the funds in a restricted account just as they do with other grants free of charge, and has agreed to be ineligible to receive any funds from the program. The funds from the sale of the specialty plate will be distributed through a grant process to help serve spay/neuter vouchers for low income families. Here are some of the FAQ’s about the new plates: |
-
Fees: Citizens who choose to buy a Pet Friendly License Plate will pay their annual Idaho vehicle registration fee, and the first time they purchase one will pay an additional $35.00 for the specialty plate. Upon purchase of the plate for the first year, $22.00 of the $35.00 fee will be deposited into the Pet Lovers Fund and $13.00 will go to the state highway account. Upon renewal of the plate each year after, the applicant will pay their annual Idaho vehicle registration and an additional $25.00, of which $12.00 will go to the Pet Lovers Fund and $13.00 will go to the state highway account
-
When will the plate be available for purchase? The bill was signed by Governor Brad Little on March 15, 2019. However, it will not become law until July 1, which is when all the bills passed during the legislative session go into effect. The Idaho Transportation Department will need to make a template to create the plate so it can begin production, and at this time we don’t have information on how long that will take but we will let everyone know when it’s ready for purchase.
-
Can I get my pet’s picture on the plate? No, the Idaho Department of Transportation does not have the ability to change the graphics for each plate ordered. The image of the yellow lab, Sam, and black and white tuxedo cat, Betty, were chosen because they represent animals that are loved and owned statewide. The artwork was created by a local Boise artist, Millie Reddig, who is well known for her beautiful and realistic paintings of her clients’ pets as well as her amazing cat trapping skills. Sam and Betty were two animals she had painted for their owners in their remembrance after they crossed the rainbow bridge. You can read more about Millie from an article the Idaho Statesman did on her last year
https://www.idahostatesman.com/news/local/article216310230.html
-
When will the funds be available to apply for a grant? Once the plate is available for purchase, the Idaho Transportation Department collects the fees for an entire year, and makes one annual deposit to the Idaho State Treasurer’s Office, who in turn will transfer the money to the Pet Lovers Fund. Due to this system, and depending on the production timing of when the plate will be available for purchase, the earliest the first funds could be available is at the end of 2020 but it may not be until 2021.

Why you should spay/neuter your pet |
The decision to
spay or neuter your pet is an important one for pet owners. It can be the single best decision you make for their long-term welfare.
Reduce pet homelessness
In every community, in every state, there are homeless animals. In the U.S., there are an estimated 6-8 million homeless animals entering animal shelters every year. Barely half of these animals are adopted. Tragically, the rest are euthanized. These are healthy, sweet pets who would have made great companions.
The
number of homeless animals varies by state—in some states there are as many as 300,000 homeless animals euthanized in animal shelters every year. These are not the offspring of homeless "street" animals—these are the puppies and kittens of cherished family pets and even purebreds.
Many people are surprised to learn that nationwide, more than 2.7 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters annually. Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100 percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats.

Your pet's health
A
USA Today (May 7, 2013) article cites that pets who live in the states with the highest rates of spaying/neutering also live the longest. According to the report, neutered male dogs live 18% longer than un-neutered male dogs and spayed female dogs live 23% longer than unspayed female dogs. The report goes on to add that in Mississippi, the lowest-ranking state for pet longevity, 44% of the dogs are not neutered or spayed.
