Broadcasting the gospel in Dinka Malual, being on air consistently, distributing solar powered radio receivers, a well built radio mast, proper configuration of the antennae, the flat land, and an available audience, are some of the factors that help us dominate the airwaves of Northern Bahr el Ghazal region of South Sudan. With extremely poor literacy levels, and almost inexistent infrastructure, radio remains a very good strategy to use in our mission.
Although through the radio we can teach them to obey all that Christ has commanded, baptism and discipleship can only be effectively done by the local church. This is why one of our most valued target audience is the local church pastor/leader.We have 800 Pastors/church leaders that meet with us at least twice a year for teaching and follow up. They have reported to us that many churches have been planted because of the influence of our radio ministry. In 2017 alone we distributed through these Pastors 19,000 solar powered radio receivers. The demand for the radios is so big, that it took only 4 hours to distribute 12,000 radios in December 2017.
To help foster local ownership of the radio ministry, these pastors collect an offering from their church members every year to contribute towards the operational costs of the Radio. We also formed a local board of directors from among these pastors to help in the governing of the radio business. One of our goals when we came to Aweil was to lead the radio station towards local ownership and sustainability. We are thankful that we have started to realize this. As a result, Joseph resigned from his position as the director of the radio station, and handed over the responsibility to Pastor Karlo Majok (manager) and the board of directors. He will however continue to support the ministry in all aspects including, technical advice, financial management, strategy building, and consultancy.
We are taking initial strides in starting a new Jurchol (Luo) radio station in Bar Mayen, about 75KM south of Aweil East State. “Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore to send out workers into his harvest fields.” Matt 9:38 NIV. Pray also that the Lord will continue to provide for us as we serve in South Sudan.
There has been a growing tension in Aweil East (our State) as some soldiers and former government leaders have been defecting to the armed rebel faction that camps here. Pray for protection and peace.
