“The falling leaves drift by my window, the Autumn leaves of red and gold….” What a glorious riot of color is occurring outside our windows at this very moment! Simply riding through the streets of Charlotte fills me with such awe! I hope you are experiencing it as well since our final 2024 meeting is rapidly approaching with Thanksgiving occurring the week afterward.
As you encounter any of our 2024 SSQ Officers over the next few weeks, please take time to thank them for volunteering during this past year. By now, given all my Friday announcements from the podium, you should know that we would not have a 51-year-old organization to this very day if it were not for our reliable volunteers, especially Steve Lauer who has had to cover for me when I have been ill this year, and we have had meetings that need to be led.
Thank you also for your attendance this year. We hope to see you in 2025, perhaps as a committee volunteer? You could also consider becoming an officer. As I retire from the presidential position, I will be in charge of the Nominating Committee and will be diligently searching for new people to involve and nominate. If you are interested, please let me know!

Holiday Luncheon
Just days after Thanksgiving, you are invited to enjoy a fun social event on Dec. 4 with your Senior Scholars’ friends. Nancy Stancill and the Social Committee have made wonderful plans for us at Maggioni’s Little Italy at SouthPark Mall. The plans also include some festive holiday music
beforehand from two of our own members, Randy Broome on trombone and Pierce Howard on B flat and Piccolo trumpets. Who knows, they might even have a bit of percussion playing in the background! Our luncheon speaker, Mark Washburn, formerly with the Charlotte Observer, covered the Miracle on the Hudson story for two weeks after the plane went down. His memories will make a nice add-on to our recent field trip to the Sullenberger Museum. For the event, our tasty menu is slated to include:
Tomato Bruschetta
Stuffed Mushrooms
Tossed Salad
Chicken Marsala
Mom’s Meat Lasagna
Mushroom Ravioli
Ciabatta Rolls
Gigi’s Butter Cake or Tiramisu
Coffee and tea
Yum! You will also be able to order beverages or wine from their bar if you care to pay for them.
Holiday Luncheon Registration is being accepted as a check before our Friday meetings, or you may pay online anytime with your credit card on our website. For only $50 per person, you will be able to share this feast! Please bring your check on Friday to reserve your holiday dining experience.

Guess what I just did as I wrote this email…I registered directly on our website for both of us to attend the Holiday Luncheon AND I renewed our memberships for 2025. It was very quick and easy. You should do the same right now while you are thinking about it!

Become an SSQ Volunteer
If you are either a new member or a long-time member, please consider volunteering for Senior Scholars in order to get to know more of our members through committee work. We need all our volunteers to handle the many tasks that create our meetings and communications each week. Serving in a position with Senior Scholars is very rewarding personally as well as a wonderful way to acquire a new circle of interesting friends. Currently, we are seeking 6 additional volunteers. Two of our members just joined our volunteers to help with the Lunch Bunch activities.
