Clean Up Peel Waterways, General Meeting to adopt the New Rules, Raptors & more.
|
|
Our amazing wetlands and waterways are often subject to illegal dumping or careless littering of rubbish.
In March every year, we and our partners target and remove litter across the region by combining the efforts of our community to work together to clean up the Peel Waterways. This year over 20 groups will take part in cleaning up litter from the Peel-Yalgorup wetland system.
Download the clean-up programme.
Visit
www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au for information about how to arrange your own clean-up.
New events are being added all the time, so there’s bound to be one near you.
You are encouraged to photograph and video your efforts, and share them widely.
Or send them to us and we’ll share them for you.

Free Verge Trees
The Mandurah Tree Advocates, one of Mandurah Environment & Heritage Group's projects, are encouraging residents to contact the City of Mandurah to apply for a free verge tree which are planted by the City’s Landscape Services Section between May and July.
Apply for a street tree before the end of March.
The image shows a resident of Mandurah standing by a Red Flowering Gum.
This bird-attracting Western Australian native tree was planted by the City in June 2017; eighteen months before the photo was taken.

We would, however, like Dudley Dolphin to run in the Mascot Race on Easter Saturday. Do you know someone who would be willing to don the costume and sprint in the race on 20th April?

Caroline Knight’s talk on Bhutan – A Model of Sustainability
Deputy Mayor Caroline Knight attended the MEHG committee meeting on 11th February because she recently had the privilege of visiting Bhutan, and she wanted to share her knowledge and the delight she experienced as a result of visiting this fascinating country.
If you thought it was a simple country still behind the times,
these facts may surprise you.
|
|
|
Instead of GDP, Bhutan concentrates on
Gross National Happiness which is supported by four pillars:
1. Sustainable development. 2. Preservation and promotion of cultural values.
3. Conservation of the natural environment. 4. Establishment of good governance.
These values are no doubt held as a result of several factors including its former isolation (due to its terrain), its selfless religion (Buddhism) and the fact that it may be the only country in the world that has never been conquered.
It sounds like the perfect holiday destination. Right?
Yes, but tourists must pay $250 to visit. Per day!

Mandurah Environmental Volunteer Action Committee
Several MEHG committee members are also members of the Mandurah Environmental Volunteer Action Committee. The next MEVAC meeting is on Thursday 28th February at 4.00pm in the Tuckey Room.
It will be followed by a presentation by climate change researcher Aaron Tuckey who will be talking about
sustainability, climate change and the Anthropocene.

Western Australians know we should be taking greater action on climate change
In the coming weeks, the WA Environmental Protection Authority will provide critical advice on how WA’s biggest polluters should respond to climate change.
The advice could give the oil and gas industry a free pass to pollute for decades to come.
Or it could finally hold them to account, creating thousands of new jobs in sustainable industries like renewable energy and tree planting.
To make the right decision, they need to hear from you now.
