Keeping Your Child Involved In Youth Sports
Did you know that an estimated 30 million children play organized sports each year in the United States? Youth Sports helps children fight obesity, lead healthier lives and learn about important things such as team work, discipline and responsbility. It is also important to note that an estimated 70 percent of children quit organized youth sports by the age of 13.
As parents, our job revolves around the big picture of making sure that our children enjoy sports while learning about the sport(s) they are participating in. Remember to emphasize, and also demonstrate YMCA Character Development values of Honesty, Respect, Responsibility and Caring during all sporting events. Winning comes and goes, but values will always remain.
Parents can display good sportsmanship and help to instill values by being a positive and encouraging supporter; cheer for the good plays for both teams. Remember you are cheering for your child and their team, you are not the coach nor the official. Remember to keep it fun! |
