Stunning First IC37 Class Regatta at NYYC Annual
After two years in development, the Melges IC37 Class enjoyed its first major outing at the New York Yacht Club’s 165th Annual Regatta in Newport. Held over three days in a range of conditions, the fleet provided the excitement and close tactical racing the Club wanted when it created the Class.
Friday started bright and breezy for the separately scored Around The Island Race. Beating out of Newport Harbour in 20+ knots into an increasing swell as they approached Beavertail point was a challenging start, rewarded with an exhilarating downwind ride. Rush opened up a lead on this leg they held to the finish at Fort Adams.
Ultimately the Members Only Syndicate led by Jay Cross, Hannah Swett, and Ben Kinney staked their claim on the New York Yacht Club 165th Annual Regatta title, narrowly beating Double Jointed who dominated most of the weekend series.
Team Double Jointed finished the regatta strong, winning the day with an impressive 4 - 2 - 2 scoreline. Co-Skipper Ray Wulff noted the key to their consistency and success is their crew.
“Full credit to our team! It’s a lot of learning with this new boat, and we’ve got a tremendous group who’s open-minded. Because of that, we’re learning every single race, every single day. The great thing is that we’re sharing a lot with the other teams, and everybody is getting better. It’s fantastic!”
Elsewhere at the event our IRC 43 Cool Breeze owned by John Cooper won the Around The Island Race in IRC3, and missed out on the Overall win by only half a point.
Caol Ila R Wins Rolex Giraglia Race Overall
The Mills IRC72 Caol Ila R of Alex Schaerer is the Overall Winner of the 2019 Rolex Giraglia Race. All 243 yachts starting the iconic 240 mile race in St. Tropez were treated to record-setting conditions. Schaerer and his crew handled the breeze best to pull out more than an hour’s corrected time lead. This is the second result in a row for Caol Ila R after winning the Rolex Capri Sailing Week a month ago.
