Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has shown a complete disregard for the privacy rights of Illinois citizens with her pronouncement that the Illinois State Police (ISP) must make public a list of those who have a Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card.
"We applaud the Illinois State Police for their refusal to comply and support their patriotism in standing up for the Constitution and the rights that it protects," states Lupe Diaz, State Chair of the Libertarian Party of Illinois.
“While the Libertarian Party recognizes the Bill of Rights as adequate authority to protect our right to privacy, we will support the proposed legislation that seeks to make the disclosure of the FOID information unlawful,” added Mr. Diaz.
"What possible motivation would AG Madigan have in releasing this information when to do so would provide a blueprint to criminals who seek to steal firearms as well as those looking for unarmed victims?” asks Mr. Diaz.
How far could this go if Madigan prevails. If FOID information is public record, well then, what about those on welfare, or those in state mental institutions? Will she allow the addresses of private residences of politicians, police and judges? It doesn’t take a very detailed look at this policy to realize how foolhardy, outrageous, and absurd her position is. It is the role of the Attorney General to protect all of the rights guaranteed by our Constitution, not just the ones she agrees with.
"Lisa Madigan should be pushing for legislation to end the FOID requirement, and push for a concealed gun or open carry bills. The FOID information is private, and should remain so; this is a clear violation of individual liberties. "This is yet another reason for the people of Illinois to cast their vote for Libertarians running for office," Diaz asserts.
