Full Moon Sunset Nature Hike
& After-Party at OVB
Saturday, May 10
Due to various obstacles in the way, this will (finally!) be the first full moon hike of 2025 which, by the way, marks my 49th year of leading Herb Walks. After witnessing the sunset and moonrise, we’ll walk back to the trailhead by remaining daylight, moonlight, and flashlight, returning to the trailhead at about 7:30.
Then at 7:30 p.m. you’re invited to join me and Rondia on the heated patio at Liz and Jeremy Haffner’s Ojai Valley Brewery (OVB). Brewmasters Jeremy, Griffin Davis, and their staff will be pouring their amazing locally-sourced beers, ales, stouts, wines, and non-alcoholic beverages as we celebrate the full moon and my 49-year milestone while “La Luna” continues to rise in the eastern sky. El Maiz Mexican Food Truck will be there and the Top Shelf Brass Band is scheduled to play. Click here or on the photo above or read the article below to learn more.

Nature Preserve Walk at Taft Gardens
Saturday, May 17
Please join me for my monthly Nature Preserve Walk at Taft Gardens on Saturday, May 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., meeting at 8:45 a.m. We will explore trails through the wild parts of the property, identify and discuss native plants, and observe birds and animal tracks in the context of local ecology.
This event is a perfect fit with my personal mission to open a space for people to connect with the natural world, starting with the plant kingdom. The diversity of plant communities and native species make Taft Nature Preserve the ideal place. Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve was featured in an L. A. Times article on “The 16 Most Beautiful and Inviting Public Gardens in Southern California” and included in the RedBook Magazine list of “The 12 Most Beautiful Botanical Gardens in the United States.”
The $35 cost includes a $10 donation to benefit the CEF, the non-profit steward of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve.
Please note: This event is presented by the Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF), stewards of Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. They are handling all registrations. To register for the event, please visit this page or email taftgardensvisitors@gmail.com. Registrants will receive an email from CEF with detailed directions. Please do not try to find the venue by using other maps or GPS. Allow plenty of time to find the venue and to make your way up the miles-long driveway.

First Herb Walk to Rose Valley Falls since 2017!! |
|
|
Due to fire, flood, COVID, and lengthy highway repairs, it's been 8 years since I've been able to lead a walk to Rose Valley Falls. Please join me for an Herb Walk on Sunday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. You will experience a local scenic wonder 300 feet high and learn about Rose Valley’s diverse plant communities.
After a drive up California Scenic Highway 33, the outing will begin with a stop at Upper Rose Valley Lake followed by a walk through Rose Valley Campground and a shaded walk of 1/2 mile each way to the Falls.
We will see and smell aromatic California Bay trees, see native Coral Bells and Maidenhair Ferns growing on the Falls, and search for the elusive Sweet Cicely and California Violet herbs on the trail to the Falls. It’s a great time of year to see a variety of wildflowers.
This walk is presented under a Special Use Permit from the Ojai Ranger District Office of the U.S. Forest Service designed for guides who provide recreational and interpretive services to the public. As I do on all my walks and hikes, I will demonstrate and discuss the modern and ancient uses of wild plants. Poisonous plants will also be identified.

Join the first-ever public tour of Rancho Tajiguas |
|
|
At 3,272 acres, Rancho Tajiguas is the largest ranch between Goleta and Gaviota State Park. In operation since 1798, the ranch is home to many plant and animal species. The Gaviota Coast Conservancy (GCC) recently purchased it and they now are offering the first public tour. This special event is available only to my newsletter subscribers and visitors to my website.
Rancho Tajiguas will eventually be a center for conservation, agriculture, and public access.
Tajiguas Creek creates its own riparian environment as it weaves its way across the landscape to the nearby ocean. On Sunday, May 18, we will walk up a ranch road about a half-mile along Tajiguas Creek to the old ranch bunkhouse and then proceed up Tajiguas Canyon for another quarter-mile on a seldom-used trail for a shaded herb walk in a pristine riparian habitat. We will retrace our steps and then you’ll proceed in your car to the beautiful and historic Hacienda where you can enjoy your sack lunch in the courtyard and utilize the restroom facilities.
GCC board member Phil McKenna will be along to share some of the history and lore of this special property.
The cost is $50/person, which includes a $15 donation to GCC. It's already filling up fast and is likely to sell out.

Road and trail conditions, alerts, closures, and fire restrictions are mostly the same this month in our local Los Padres National Forest. Higher elevation sites on the Ojai Ranger District (ORD) of the Los Padres National Forest remain closed for the winter but typically open up in May. The Matilija Wilderness remains off-limits while the trails and Matilija Canyon Road are undergoing repairs due to storm damage. A Forest Closure Order is in effect through July 18, 2025. Everything else is open.
For more information on ORD road and trail conditions, visit this webpage or click on the logo above. For alerts and fire danger status, visit this webpage.
Note: For best current info, contact your local USFS Ranger District Office. The Ojai office is open Thursday through Saturday at (805) 646-4348. |

Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center Open House |
|
|
In addition to all the valuable trail work they do, for over 20 years the Los Padres Forest Association (LPFA) has hosted annual Open Houses each spring at the Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center.
These are family-friendly events where they invite the community to explore the Visitor Center and get an opportunity to learn about our beloved Los Padres National Forest.
Local organizations, agencies and forest friends participate in the Open House by setting up booths to share their achievements and knowledge of the forest. It’s a great chance to learn about the critters, trails, camps, plants and creeks that call the Los Padres home. The Open Houses are also a lot of fun with games, raffles and events designed to entertain forest lovers of all ages.
SIDE NOTE: See the article below for a PDF of the Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail Plant Guide.
Please click here to learn more about the 2025 Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 3. |

Here's another of my occasional guides to online articles and resources that I think you may find interesting.
While not all the original trail signs remain and some of the plants have moved since the 2017 fire, all the plants are still growing there, making this a handy guide to one of our best local Ojai trails.
This fascinating and informative map was published by the National Wholesale Druggists' Association in 1932. That alone says a lot about the role of plants in the pharmacy trade at that time. Now you can view an interactive version. It's really fun for herbal history nerds!
Pine Mountain is at risk. The federal court has cleared the way for the Pine Mountain Project, an unnecessary and destructive logging and vegetation removal project, to proceed. Despite overwhelming public opposition and years of engagement from thousands of community members, Indigenous leaders, scientists, businesses, conservation groups, and local governments.
now might be our last opportunity to save Pine Mountain.
Pronunciation of Biological Latin,
Including Scientific Names of Plants and Animals (Peter Ommundsen)
This handy-dandy little book is now available free online as a PDF. Afraid to say the Latin name of plants for fear of grossly mispronouncing them? Fear no more.
