Rudeness to me is a lack of consideration for others' feelings. I see no reason to be impolite, disrespectful, or insensitive. The problem with being rude is the damage it can cause. It can have significant negative impacts, leading to strained relationships, decreased trust, and feelings of hurt or resentment. It can damage one's reputation and limit opportunities for meaningful connections or success in various aspects of life, including personal, professional, and social spheres.
Rudeness also
creates hostility and anger, hinders communication, decreases workplace productivity by lowering morale, causes emotional harm, breeds resentment, destroys respect, causes fights, blocks understanding and openness, and makes you look bad. I see nothing advantageous with any of those.
When I typed 'synonyms for “rude”' into Google, here is the list they gave me. How would you like to hire or be associated with a
disrespectful, uncivil, ill-mannered, offensive, crude, insolent, brash, inconsiderate,
or discourteous person? Ouch! I want nothing to do with such a person. Here's a perfect acrostic for how I feel about rude people. They have:
R - Respect Deficiency
U - Unpleasant demeanor
D - Disregard for courtesy
E - Egoistic behavior
Again, the acrostic describes someone I have no need for. Life is too short to waste time with rude people. Just because someone holds a high position of authority or great wealth doesn’t give them the right to be rude to anyone. On the contrary, it should be just the opposite. Samuel Johnson once stated,
“The true measure of a person is how they treat someone who can do them absolutely no good." I really like that quote.
We all need to understand that rudeness reflects poorly on our character. Persistent rudeness can tarnish one's reputation and lead others to perceive them as disrespectful or untrustworthy. Rudeness will also limit opportunities by closing doors for collaboration, networking, and advancement in both personal and professional settings. Pure and simple: people just don’t want to work or be around a rude person.
So, what should we all strive for? I think this anonymous quote sums it up nicely:
“Treat everyone with politeness,
even those who are rude to you –
not because they are nice,
but because you are."
