In the U.S. and Europe, some high-profile hotels have closed or gone into foreclosure, but Latin American tourism is going strong, with major new luxury hotels opening lately in Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Chile. Four Seasons is planning two city hotels and a beach resort in Brazil.

Seek Out the Real News for Your Destination
| "Aren't you scared to go to Mexico?" is a question I've gotten so often that it really makes me wonder about the intelligence of my fellow Americans. It doesn't matter how many times you tell them the violence on the border has nothing to do with what's happening in the Riviera Maya or San Miguel de Allende, any more than violence in Detroit has anything to do with Beverly Hills or Charleston. And Mexico has fewer homicides than sun-and-fun Jamaica or our nation's capital of Washington D.C. A year's worth of Mexican pickpocketing happens every day in Rome. But none of that plays well on Fox or CNN, where a distressingly large percentage of people get their news.
So my one request of you, dear subscribers, is to take some time to consult real international news before deciding whether Puerto Vallarta is really more dangerous than your own city, or whether Chile's earthquake earlier this year is really going to effect your Patagonia vacation. Or whether mudslides in Rio have anything to do with your trip to Salvador, Bahia.
Recommended: The Week magazine, The Economist, the BBC's world news website, and the online version of the local English newspaper of the place you're visiting. (Your guidebook will usually list it in the resources.) Latin Trade is good if you're interested in the business side as well. Message boards from Fodor's, FlyerTalk, MexConnect, and Lonely Planet give a good feel for what's actually happening on the ground.

What's New in Luxury Latin America?
| Our writers have been busy expanding our Brazil hotel coverage, scoping out notable new upscale resorts, and checking into new real estate investment markets.
In Brazil we added the hip DPNY Beach Hotel that's driving distance from Sao Paulo, as well as L'Hotel Porto Bay in the city itself. In Colombia we just posted a review of new boutique hotel Ananda in Cartagena.
We also posted first-person reviews of two notable new resort openings in Peru: Libertador Hotel Paracas on the southern coast and the Starwood Luxury Collection entry into the country, Aranwa Resort & Spa in the Sacred Valley. See the Luxury Hotels in Peru page for links to these and more.
I was amazed by the bargain real estate prices I saw in Ecuador when I was there last fall, so when we had a correspondent in the area I got him to scope out the real estate market in a beautiful city that's starting to get lots of press: Cuenca. See the full Cuenca Real Estate story here.

Coming Soon
The best way to keep up with new items as they go up is to subscribe to the RSS feed of our blog. There I also toss in notable travel news from Latin America, reviews of airlines active there, and the occasional relevant book or spirits review. You can also follow us on Twitter at LuxLatinamerica.
Soon we'll be adding a new designer hotel in Cartagena, a review of the St. Regis in Mexico City, and more from Peru.
And as always, we'll have some of our expert writers out exploring the horizons with select luxury tour companies.
Stay tuned!
