In 2009, tourism in Mexico fell through the floor: it was an eerie feeling to walk around half-empty Playa del Carmen last summer as the H1N1 flu virus hype was in full swing. So maybe the news that tourism in Mexico was up nearly 20% in the first eight months of this year isn't a big surprise. Still, it's encouraging, especially for all those hotel owners who have been dealing with 20% occupancy levels.
I'm in Guanajuato right now and the locals are saying this is the biggest opening week they've ever seen for the Cervantino Festival. Most of the big shows sold out weeks ago and it's getting tough to find a room on the weekends.
The border violence news is still keeping the U.S. visitor numbers down though, so you can still be assured of finding great deals at the best hotels in Mexico. If nothing else, you're booking will probably include a round of golf, a spa credit, or an extra meal or two as enticement. Fly over the border and then wherever you land you'll probably feel safer than you do in your own home city. I sure do. |
