Winter Travel: High Heat or Extreme Cold?

From one of the hottest places to sleeping on ice...

Hey, how's your winter going?
Many people fall into one of two camps this time of year. They get grumpy and dream about escaping to somewhere sunny and warm, or they cheerfully shout, "I love winter!" while getting on skis, showshoes, or ice skates.
I have lived in Florida or Mexico the past 10 years, so I'm clearly not a fan of freezing. I did embrace winter and go all out last month though, spending some time in Quebec City. See the story this month on sleeping in an ice hotel and wandering a city that's downright quiet compared to the busy summer months.
Julia Hubbel went to the other extreme, visiting one of the strangest and hottest places on the planet, the Danikil Depression of Ethiopia. The real story is the interactions with the local people though, most of them involving money.
Or maybe your ideal winter vacation is sitting on a beach? David Kalish makes his debut this month not by sitting on a beach chair, but spending a day helping out the loggerhead turtles still trying to lay their eggs among them on the island of Crete.
Claudia Flisi returns with a story that fits the template, "This place used to suck, now it doesn't": Palermo, Sicily. She compares her first visit in a tie of mob hits and car bombs to a much calmer now.
Susan Griffith checks out three new and noteworthy travel books, including one on some of the world's wildest places.

We give away something cool for travelers each month to one of our readers. Congrats to Katie O. from upstate New York. She will be warming up in a MerinoLUX Flannel Shirt from Royal Robbins.
This time, one reader will learn how to save thousands of dollars in their winter travels and beyond, having great experiences for less money. I’ll be shipping an Amazon package of these four titles: The World’s Cheapest Destinations 5th Edition, The Affordable Flight Guide, Travel the World on $50 a Day, and the beautiful Comfortably Wild: The Best Glamping Destinations in North America.
This month's contest is open to residents of the USA, UK, and Canada. To enter, you just need to answer the following questions:
1) What number of loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings will survive to maturity?
2) What were priest Pino Puglisi's last words in Sicily?
3) Fill in the blank: author Dan Richards can't ____ or _____.
All the answers are easily found in our new issue.
To enter, send the answers with your physical shipping address to editor (at) perceptivetravel.com or just reply to this newsletter with the answers and address.
Please spread the word if you like what you see! Share buttons are at the bottom of each story. If you know someone who appreciates quality travel writing and would like to receive this newsletter, pass it on! Or send them to the home page to subscribe.
