PASADENA - The Soul of Raymond Ave |
|
|
My newest painting is of a unique see-through church tower in Pasadena, beautiful against the mountains. Other clues to the Pasadena, CA location are the outdoor dining taking up a traffic lane, yellow-flowered trees in the Spring and plenty of sunshine and palm trees.
To make the tower large enough and to include the restaurant tent seating that takes up most of a lane in the street, I had to eliminate a few buildings. The tower is the focal point, but I also liked the black car, and the lovely yellow trees that line Raymond Ave in the spring. The cross on top is oriented towards an east and west view, but it looked like an antennae without its arms, so I faced it south, towards the viewer.
My church is on this street, and I drive toward that striking tower each week heading for the freeway.
I’ve always liked to paint mountains in the background, perhaps because I grew up in Denver, CO, and the church tower against the mountain is an impressive part of the skyline. I like how churches build towers to call to the flock, saying, “Don’t become so mired in the challenges of life that you forget to focus on what truly matters.” I think the open windows somehow lend to the spiritual nature of a church.
Enjoy!

SHORT SAYING BY R. MATE
“Art in your home is the singing of your soul.”
COLLECTORS CORNER
Most collectors have bought my art due to a personal interaction with me. I did a painting of a couple of classic cars in the annual, 5-block long, Glendale Cruise Night. Using my artistic license, I put the cars in front of a Glendale landmark, the Alex Theatre, and I had a fellow bending over to look in the window of one of the cars, which is what most people do at car shows. When I showed the art, out on the sidewalk, at the Burbank Art Walk, a man came up who said he had helped out on the first Glendale Cruise Nights when they were still in the park, before a major boulevard was closed off in the heart of Glendale California for the current events. I talked to him and he walked away, but he came back. He said he never buys art, but he had to have my painting.
OUTREACH
When I attended a weekly group of artists called Creative Artists Forum for Expansion (C.A.F.E.), which encouraged us to do art and bring it to share with the others, one of the founders of the group, the late Bruce Gilham Sr, said that there is a new arts movement. He called it Effective Art, because the artist cares about the effect that art has on the viewer. He, like me, made art intended to uplift, not depress or confuse people. Though there is no formality to this movement, you can look around and notice which art repels you, and which art you’d like to take home. As part of an Open-Mic, I once did a stage performance where we hid behind and spoke for one of three large paintings. The pleasant one said it created a calming effect on viewers, the knife/death/chaotic one said its viewers went out and committed crimes, and the inspirational painting said that its viewers went on to do great things.
