Education: Before 1967, every state in the U.S. banned abortion. In that year, the American Medical Association condoned abortion for certain cases, and Colorado, North Carolina, and California followed suit. By 1970, 4 states passed laws to allow abortion on demand. Pro-life forces organized in 1972, and were beginning to turn the tide, but |

in 1973, Roe v. Wade suddenly made abortion legal in all 50 states. Legal abortion became the law of the land for almost 50 years. Pro-life advocates worked to pass restrictions on abortion, and to educate the people on fetal development. In time education was expanded to include the negative effects of abortion on the mothers – both physical and emotional. In 2022, Roe v. Wade was finally reversed and control of abortion went back to each state.
So how do the individual states now stand on abortion? Only thirteen states have banned abortion after conception. They each have exceptions to save the life of the mother, and a few have exceptions to prevent serious physical impairment of the mother. Four have exceptions for rape and incest. Two states ban abortion after 6 weeks, and 4 after 12 to 15 weeks. (23 total states do not allow abortion after 15 weeks.) On the other hand, six states allow abortion up until birth, and 19 more allow abortion up until “viability” or 22-24 weeks or later. (25 states) Utah bans abortion after 18 weeks, and Iowa recently banned abortion after 6 weeks, but it has been blocked by litigation; the current law allow abortion up to 22 weeks.

Prayer: Dear Father God, please rain down your grace on everyone in the United States who does not understand that abortion not only kills a child but deeply wounds both mothers and fathers. We thank you for the blessing for our country that states are now allowed to protect preborn children. Help women in every state to find the help they need, with donors continuing to support pregnancy centers and other assistance for single moms. Help us all to continue to work toward changing our culture to acknowledge the immorality of abortion and enact protection for the preborn in every state and eventually to enshrine it in the U.S. Constitution.

Action: Please continue to support your local pregnancy center, whose help will be needed more than ever by women in difficult situations. Look into resources (Such as information from Live Action, Equal Rights Institute, or Justice for All), to help equip you to speak effectively to pro-choice people to help them to know the truth and accept the pro-life view. |
