Amendment has been under attack for some time as practices seen as immoral by many are accepted under the law. Those who serve weddings with flowers, cakes, etc. have been accused of illegal discrimination if they decline to serve a same-sex “wedding”. Pregnancy centers have been compelled to give information about abortion availability, and denied speech about abortion pill reversal. The compelled speech doctrine says that no one can be compelled to speak what they do not want to say. This doctrine was introduced in 1943 and confirmed by the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) to have been violated in 1977, 1990, and 2018. (1) And yet in 2020, the state of Virginia passed a law which compelled churches and other religious organizations to hire employees who do not share their beliefs.(2) The case was only settled after another SCOTUS decision in 2023 again affirmed that no one can be compelled to conduct their business in a way that includes compelled speech. (3)
So, while a Supreme Court decision is a great victory, violations of the decision will still occur and require legal action to force compliance. Hundreds of universities have violated freedoms of religion, speech, and the right to assemble by limiting controversial displays to a tiny “free speech” area, and denying religious groups registration or access to funding. (4)
How many students are being denied their rights but are not aware of the possibility of legal action against the university? Alliance Defending Freedom is a non-profit organization which leads and funds such lawsuits, with hundreds of victories resulting in financial consequences for violations of liberty.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help our nation to be firm in protecting freedom of religion and freedom of speech as a top priority in our society. Lead government entities and universities to respect those freedoms. Protect businesses and non-profits from being compelled to speak or hire in a way that opposes their faith. Help individuals with gender confusion recognize that you have made them, body and soul united, to be male or female, and help them to accept treatment that will truly give them peace in being themselves. Amen. |

Action: If you hear someone say that LGBTQ people must be given their rights, express your belief that such individuals should certainly be protected from abuse, and some kinds of discrimination, but no business should be required to celebrate a same sex marriage that conflicts with their religious beliefs, and no church should be compelled to hire someone openly practicing a lifestyle not in keeping with their faith. |
