Education: Babies born after 28 weeks gestation can often survive, although they may need significant life support. Between 22 and 28 weeks, few survive, and when they do survive, they may have significant health challenges. Researchers are now seeking human clinical trials for an artificial womb designed to help “micro-premies” survive, that is those between 22- and 28-weeks gestation. Their device is called an Extra-uterine

Environment for Newborn Development, or EXTEND. Babies would use the device for a few weeks to improve their chances of survival. (1)
While the current artificial womb is only useful after 22 weeks, discussion has begun about the ramifications of having an artificial womb available at any stage of the pregnancy. (2) A predominant pro-choice argument states the woman has a right to control her body and everything within it, and so therefore she has the right to end a pregnancy, even if the death of a child results. The existence of an artificial womb would open up the possibility that the pregnancy could be terminated without killing the child. Abortion supporters argue that a woman’s desire not to be a mother should still be respected, and she should also be able to decide what surgeries should be done on her body. In other words, it will be argued that “traditional” abortions should still be available to women, even if an artificial womb is also available. (2) That seems to make it clear that the right to have an abortion is not just about the right to end a pregnancy but the “right” to kill a child. (3)

Prayer: Dear Father God, please help women to understand that every child is a gift from God, a unique and precious human being made in Your image. You have entrusted this child to them, and no one has the right to deliberately end that life. Help them to be aware of the help that is available to get them through whatever problems the pregnancy presents, and to understand that adoption is a loving choice to provide their child with parents if they feel unable to parent themselves. |

Action: Go to https://studentsforlife.org/learn/responding-to-bodily-rights-arguments/ to read about how to refute bodily rights arguments. One basic point is that bodily autonomy has a limit. Would they think that it was acceptable for a woman to take thalidomide to ease her morning sickness in spite of the fact that it could cause her child to be born without arms or legs? Would it be acceptable for a woman to |

refuse a C-section because it would leave a scar, when it was necessary to save her child? (One woman refused a C-section in 2004 for that reason, and when she finally agreed, one of her twins had died, and the other was barely alive.) |
