The Importance of Fungi in Promoting Healthy Plant and Forest Growth
Our Zoom-only speaker on February 9 will be Andrea Porras-Alfaro, PhD. Since 2018 she has been the Program Director for the Division of Environmental Biology at the National Science Foundation in Alexandria, VA. Her topic for us is: The Importance of Fungi in Promoting Healthy Plant and Forest Growth. Fungi are diverse and abundant. They are an integral part of plants and soil communities. This talk will discuss the importance of fungi on agriculture and forest health.
PLEASE NOTE AGAIN: This presentation and audience attendance will be Zoom only, not in Wolfe Hall.

Great Decisions:
Understanding Indonesia
Our final February speaker at 10 am on February 23 will be Dr. Kevin Fogg who will deliver a Great Decisions Topic for us on “Understanding Indonesia.” Dr. Fogg is Associate Director for UNC-Chapel Hill’s Carolina Asia Center. Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country, has more Muslims than any other country on earth, is a center for global biodiversity, and is the biggest player in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Attend to hear more.

All members old and new are invited to attend our New Member Orientation meeting in person or via Zoom. Learn more about the organization including how to meet people, join events and how you can help the organization – the best way to meet new people! In person meeting is in Room 106 in PUMC.

Curriculum Committee
Curriculum Committee meetings are open to our members. Join our monthly Zoom
meetings to hear about upcoming speakers or events or to suggest speakers
you know (or have heard speak) and believe would be of interest to your
fellow Senior Scholars.
Our next Curriculum Committee meeting will be Wednesday, February 14 from 1:15 until 2:00 pm. Zoom Registration in advance is required.

Field Trip
Our first Field Trip of 2024 will be February 20. We will visit the Catawba Cultural Center in Rock Hill, SC to follow-up on last November’s program about the Catawba Nation’s history. The cost is $10 per person, and carpooling will be available from the parking lot of the Queens Sports Complex on Tyvola Road.

2024 Membership Renewals
Membership renewals for 2024 are well underway. If you are one of the 353 remaining 2023 members who have still not yet renewed, please do so now. Renewing online on our website is quick and easy with a credit card, or you may mail in a check to our Queens University address.
|
|
|
As we welcome you into Wolfe Hall, we ask that you have your orange 2024 membership card available at the entry for us to verify.
If you do not have an orange 2024 membership card, please do one of four things:
- If you renewed online, your new card may be picked up at the table with membership cards
- If you need to renew, do so at the membership desk with a $25 renewal payment
- Attend as a guest, with the payment of a $5 guest fee
- If you wish to join for the first time, pay $35 which includes your name tag and membership fee.

Wildacres Retreat
Registration is now open. The ever-popular Wildacres retreat in the beautiful North Carolina mountains is scheduled for April 22 – 25, 2024. Dates were assigned to us by Wildacres management. Speakers this year are Associate Justice Anita Earls, NC Supreme Court, and Dr. Chelsea Kaufman, Assistant Professor, Wingate University. The Wildacres Committee is already accepting completed registration forms and checks that are mailed in advance. Talk with your friends now to arrange a roommate for the retreat. (weekly meeting presentations and Zoom broadcasts) and Wildacres (organizing and helping at our 3-day spring retreat).
