Education: In 2013, Texas passed HB2, placing several requirements on abortion providers to improve the standard of care given to women, as well as banning abortions after 20 weeks, except in the case of a severe fetal abnormality. These requirements included requiring the doctor to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital, following the FDA protocol for medication abortions, and meeting the |

standards set for ambulatory surgical centers. The last requirement includes a costly requirement for wider corridors in order to allow emergency technicians to bring a gurney into the clinic to take a patient to the hospital if necessary. Before the law passed, there were 41 abortion facilities in 17 counties in Texas. The year after, only 21 clinics in six counties remained open. After passage of the law, abortions declined in Texas, particularly in those areas which were now farther from abortion clinics. In 2016, the Supreme Court struck down the two requirements of hospital admitting privileges and ambulatory surgical standards, but to date few of the closed clinics have reopened. (1)
One woman, Rikka, tells the story about how she had to wait a week for an appointment at the abortion clinic, but the waiting time allowed God time to work in her life to change her mind. A friend insisted she come to church with her one evening. One of the members voiced an urgent prayer request that he knew of a woman who had scheduled an abortion for the following week. She immediately felt shame for her previous abortions, but also felt God’s love and forgiveness. Rikka had her baby, who is now almost 3 years old. (2)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please call loving people in every state to work for laws to protect women who are considering abortion. Laws requiring parental consent, informed consent, and for medical standards to be applied to abortion serve to protect women and save babies. May new laws also be passed to protect women against coerced abortion, and require screening for risk of psychological harm from the abortion. Until we can once again unite our land in banning abortion altogether, help us to do what we can to empower women to make a truly informed and free decision. |

Action: Pray about your role in working for just laws in Texas or in your home state, laws that can protect women and babies. See
https://www.texasallianceforlife.org/pro-life-agenda/ for a list of pro-life laws that were passed in 2015, and consider signing up for their emails to keep in touch on the progress of legislation in this year’s session. Texas Right to Life (
