Proponents of the pill say that it has “no effect on pregnancy” but they are defining pregnancy as beginning at implantation rather than conception. Pharmacists for Life International states that “Numerous studies support the notion that the high dose, high-powered steroid(s) found in Emergency Abortion Drugs like Plan B are abortifacient 75 to 89% of the time.”(1) Women (15 yrs. old and older) can buy the pills (such as “Plan B”) over the counter. It is probable that a significant percentage of the decline in abortions since 1994 is due to the use of emergency contraception – but children’s’ lives are still being lost in many of these cases. In fact, today's low dose birth control pills can allow ovulation to occur 25-35% of the time. (2) If ovulation occurs, conception may occur as well, and one method of action is to prevent implantation.
