Conscience and the Christian Voter
Abortion is not just one issue among many, but a matter or life and death.

Education: As Christians, we are called to love our neighbor. One way we do that is to participate in the political process to do what we can to ensure that our government representatives are honest and trustworthy individuals who are working for the common good. We vote to form a government that works best for all the people, not just our own special interests. We must inform ourselves not only on the candidates but on the issues and how they affect the common good, and prayerfully discern the best course of action.

Sometimes there can be honest disagreement between candidates and parties about what is the best method of achieving the common good. Sometimes we may agree with one candidate on one issue, and the other candidate on other issues. But not to decide is to allow others to decide – others who may be looking out for themselves rather than the common good.
We must decide which issue is most important – not to our own life, but to the common good. Many issues have to do with trying to improve the quality of life – but abortion is literally a matter of life and death for millions of preborn children. What issue could possibly be more important than that? Since abortion is intrinsically evil, a deliberate vote to support a candidate that promotes abortion would be to cooperate in that evil. Information on candidates’ views on life issues can often be obtained from pro-life organizations such as
Texas Alliance for Life, and
National Right to Life.

Prayer: Dear Father God, please speak to the hearts of Christians in our nation and around the world as they consider their votes and political actions. Help them to clearly understand the issues and see the best course to achieve the common good. Help them to put aside selfish interests and make political decisions based on building civilizations of love, where life is respected, families are supported, and justice reigns. Inspire godly men and women to run for political office and help those who will truly best serve the community to be elected. |

Action: Take time to prayerfully consider your political stance. Be willing to talk about politics with your friends and express your concern for the children and women (and men, whole families) who are harmed by abortion. If you are not registered to vote in your current county of residence, be sure to register more than 30 days in advance of the election, or update your address if you have moved within a county. Think about what you might be able to do to help elect pro-life government representatives and officials.
Forward this email to several friends and invite them to be conscientious Christian voters. |
