some states and countries have banned abortion for the purpose of sex selection.Although England has outlawed sex selection abortions, the Crown Prosecution Service declined to prosecute two abortionists who were discovered to be performing them. An examination of U.S. census data indicated that the sex ratio of the 3rd child of Asian parents who already had 2 girls was 151 boys to 100 girls – an extremely imbalanced ratio. (1)
Now, a new genetic screening test is available that can be done at 10 weeks gestations and is less risky than amniocentesis. The test (Non-invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), or cell-free DNA screening) is able to detect trisomies (the presence of 3 of a given chromosome, rather than 2, such as causes Downs Syndrome), and also can detect the sex of the child. The test is considered a screening test rather than a definitive diagnosis, so that indication of a high risk of a trisomy should be followed up with an invasive sampling of fetal cells in order to make a firm diagnosis.
The real question is how the test will in fact be used. (2)Insurance may only pay for the test for mothers who at high risk for a trisomy, but would still be available to anyone willing to pay the cost. Seven states ban abortions for the reason of sex selection, one bans abortion because of a fetal abnormality, and one bans abortion for the reason of race. (3)
