Understanding how sleep impacts the mind.
Sleep for the brain is like gas for your car. When the tank is full you get where you need to go. But as we continue to drive, the gas gauge falls lower and lower until all the gas is gone and the car stops. Our brains operate in a similar way. The only difference is the brain’s fuel is sleep.
Sleep is the mind’s time to rest and recharge. When we get proper sleep, memories, emotions and new information are processed and filed away for our minds to retrieve later. Think about it like this: sleep for the mind is like the quiet hours at the office. When there is less to respond to, you get more work done.
So the same applies to the brain, when you are asleep it can get more work done because it doesn't have to respond to all the external stuff you encounter when you are awake. Have you ever noticed that when you've had a few late nights and missed out on sleep, you tend to be more sensitive, easily irritated, or impulsive?
In addition to emotional instability, scientists know that lack of sleep causes a chemical imbalance in the brain. Some of the most valuable chemicals in the brain are our hormones. Lack of sleep messes up the communication between the brain and its messengers, causing our hormones to act incorrectly or deliver misinformation to the body. This is why sleep deprivation poses such a dangerous threat to mental health—there’s a lot at risk if our hormones don’t deliver the correct information across the body.

Pear-Pecan Cheese Ball
Ingredients
8 oz cream cheese softened
1 ¼ cups shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese
1 medium firm ripe pear, finely chopped
1 scallion, white and green separated, finely chopped
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground pepper
⅓ cup finely chopped toasted pecans
Directions
Stir cream cheese, Cheddar, pear, scallion white, salt and pepper together in a medium bowl.
Coat a large piece of plastic wrap with cooking spray. Scoop the cheese mixture onto it. Using the plastic wrap to help you, form the cheese mixture into a ball, then completely wrap in plastic. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour and up to 2 days
Just before serving, combine pecans and the reserved scallion greens in a shallow dish. Roll the cheese ball in the mixture, pressing to adhere.
Make Ahead Tip: Prepare through Step 2 and refrigerate for up to 2 days.
